Les Gets Village History and Culture
Les Gets is a very interesting place, and when you scratch below the surface you can find lots of interesting and sometime bizzare things. It claims to be the world capital of Mechanical Music, and each summer they hold a festival in the village. There's a museum of Mechanical Music, and the tour is surprisingly interesting, especially to see the enthusiasm of the Museum guide.
The Church in Les Gets holds regular concerts, including those performed by it's Mechanical Organ.
There's a goat farm that gives regular tours, and also the local cheese dairy which offers tours and tasting.
If though you have the opportunity to take half a day off from the slopes it's well worth visiting the weekly farmer's market or wandering up and down the maind street visiting the countless artisan shops with a whole range of local produce.
If you'd like to know more please just ask when you arrive and we'd be happy to point you in the right direction and book any tours for you.
Active Activities
The French Alps have plenty of activities to get the blood flowing off the pistes as well. For those looking for active apres-ski you can try the below.
Ice Skating
Right in the heart of the village centre is the Ice Rink, popular with young and old alike. This outdoor rink is a lovely way to pass an hour early evening after a day on the slopes.
Snow Shoeing
Snowshoeing from Les Gets offers a wonderful opportunity to really get out into the wilderness. You can get away from the lifts and pistes to find some wonderful quiet spots away from the whole world, and see some of the most stunning untouched scenery. Half days, whole days and evenings shoeshoeing are available from ESF and The Show Shoe Company, starting at 24 Euros for a half day. The evening walks come highly recommended, especially on staff night off as they can end at a local restaurant.
Snowmobiling
This can be done in Avoriaz and in Praz de Lys, both about 20 minutes drive from Les Gets. Transport can be arranged. It costs 80 Euros for a 20km ride, which takes about 45 minutes.
Dog sledding
This is done on the tracks of Mont Caly (next to Mont Chery for those who've been to Les Gets Before). You can either learn to drive or just be the passenger and go along for the ride. It's about 145 euros for a full day, or you can do a half day for around 85 Euros.
Hot air ballooning
You will see the giant hot air baloons floating through Les Gets from time to time, and you can book a ride in one. Prices start at 245 Euros per person for a 1hr 30min ride.
More Extreme Winter Sports
For the brave the surrounding areas offer some more extreme winter sports such as Ice Diving, Ice Climbing and Glacier walking. These take a bit of traveling to get there. If these sports might appeal please just let us know and we'll provide you with more information.
And of course there's Parapenting in Les Gets, though that's so popular we've a separate page for that.
