Chalet Holidays in Other Ski Resorts

Les Gets is a dream ski resort in so many ways. But what happens when you want to explore beyond the local area? This page will help you find similar Alpine ski resorts, and find the best chalet companies in those areas.

The Great Beyond: Skiing outside of Les Gets

Les Gets is famed for its picture-postcard village centre and its family-friendly skiing but, biased as we are, even we recognise that there are many other ski resorts out there with plenty to offer families, beginners and experienced skiers alike.

For something a little different...

If you're looking for the exercise and adventure of skiing but without the snow then a hiking holiday can be just the ticket. With Pinnacle Walking Holidays you can enjoy the great outdoors and meet some new friends!

Exploring the Portes du Soleil

With Les Gets nestled in its South-Western corner, and boasting no less than 650km of pistes and 197 lifts, the Portes du Soleil is a huge expanse of skiable terrain which will keep most skiers occupied for a lifetime. At the opposite end of the ski area, the approach to Torgon is a very big day's skiing away, offering new challenges and style of skiing even for those who know the region well from previous Les Gets holidays.

Ski School Evasion Mont Blanc

International Ski School offering expert tuition for all levels, groups, private, off piste, ski touring, and Backcountry Adventures. Ski School Megeve | St Gervais | Les Contamines.

Going Solo?

When exploring new ski areas, many people choose to travel solo. Enjoying the total freedom of the mountain, exploring at your own pace, you can really discover the resort for yourself. The tricky part is avoiding the single supplement. Enter The Ski Gathering.

The Ski Gathering offer singles ski holidays for individual skiers and small groups. Company when you want it, freedom when you don't.

Staying Local: Exploring the rest of the Portes du Soleil Ski Area

With one of the world's most impressive lift infrastructures, the Portes du Soleil offers several exciting destinations, all within easy skiable distance of each other. You will find great accommodation providers in all of these resorts, or you can simplyu ski there, have lunch, and ski back in time for afternoon tea.

The nearest ski resort to Les Gets, Morzine will be familiar to many who have visited the Les Gets area before. Although at a slightly lower altitude, the resort itself is larger than Les Gets and has a little more to offer in terms of nightlife and aprés ski. Like Les Gets, Morzine has a lift infrastructure on both sides of the valley, with Les Gets to the south west and Super Morzine and Avoriaz to the north east.

A unique destination in every sense, Avoriaz is an unmistakable and unforgettable ski resort ... once you have found it. A modern and functional ski resort with an emphasis on self-catering apartments at affordable prices, Avoriaz has been designed to blend into the surrounding landscape and it does this remarkably well. To the point that it all but disappears!

Made up of jagged and angular buildings with few regular lines or silhouettes, the buildings of Avoriaz immitate the cliffs on which they sit, camouflaging themselves perfectly against the snow coated rocks beneath. Looking across from the top of Mont Chery here in Les Gets, you would not know that a whole ski resort is looking back at you until somebody pointed it out.

Châtel has much in common with Les Gets. Although slightly smaller, it boats the same great access to great skiing, with a bubble lift straight out of the resort centre bringing the full expanse of the Portes du Soleil within comfortable reach. Also like Les Gets, Châtel is very picturesque, comprising mostly chalets and traditional buildings of wood and stone. An easy 90 minutes from Geneva, Châtel is an attractive destination for week-long and short breaks alike.

We will be adding information about recommended local chalet companies here in the weeks ahead. Thanks for your patience. In the mean time, have a look at our sister company's Morzine/Avoriaz property listings.

The Three Valleys

When it comes to sheer scale and impressive infrastructure, it takes a ski area as impressive as the Three Valleys to rival the Portes du Soleil. Skiers visiting Les Trois Vallees enjoy access to 600km of marked pistes, 180 lifts, skiing from 1,100m to 3,200m, and some incredible off piste skiing, too.

The Belleville Valley

With the quiet and traditional resort of St Martin de Belleville and the more modern Les Menuires, with its ski-in/ski-out possibilities, the Belleville Valley offers great accommodation as well as great skiing. Climbing to the lofty Val Thorens, Europe's highest ski resort (2,300m), the Belleville Valley offers phenomenal skiing opporunities for visitors of all skiing and boarding abilities.

The Meribel Valley

The central of the three, the Meribel Valley contains each of the famous Meribel resorts (Meribel Mottaret 1750, Meribel 1450, Meribel Village 1400 and Meribel Les Allues 1100) as well as Brides Les Bains below, accessible by bubble lift. A purpose-built resort, Meribel has some of the very best infrastructure and is sleek and modern throughout. Here, you will find some of the most high-end luxury chalets in the Alps.

The Courchevel Valley

The Courchevel Valley has the Courchevel Resorts (Courchevel 1850, Courchevel 1650, Courchevel 1550 and Courchevel Le Praz 1300) and La Tania. Even among the luxurious resorts of the Three Valleys, Courchevel stands out for its opulence. Watch out for famous faces on the piste.

Other Ski Areas and Resorts

On this page, we have focused mainly on the two biggest ski areas in France, the Portes du Soleil and the Three Valleys. But, big and popular as they are, there is much to explore even beyond these vast regions. Before your bucket list of skiing can be considered 'done', here are some other ski destinations which you will almost certainly want to discover.

La Plagne

When it comes to sheer statistics, La Plagne is pretty hard to beat. It gives access to year-round glacier skiing at 3,250m with descents all the way down to 1,250m. That's one hell of a ride.

It has 225km of marked runs of its own and a double-decker cable car link to another 200km in and around neighbouring Les Arcs. Add this all together and you get the massive Paradiski area, served by its impressive 132 lifts.

Established in the 1960-70s, Flaine's architecture draws heavily on Bauhaus school of design. Since that time, more traditional architectural styles have grown in prominence throughout most other resorts, making Flaine something of a standout and, arguably, a bit of a Marmite resort; some love it, some don't.

Flaine is linked to Samoens, Morillon, Les Carroz and Sixt-Fer-à-Cheval, with 267 km of pistes in total. More information about Flaine Ski Resort ».

According to the much respected Telegraph Ski Supplement, "a combination of enviable snow cover, a variety of impressive terrain and a season that lasts most of the year makes Tignes one of the most dependable winter destinations in France."

Access to the Grand Motte glacier means that Tignes ski resort only closes for ten weeks of the summer months. Otherwise, you can ski here all year round! Find out more about Tignes Ski Resort, France.

Val d'Isere

For the British market, Val d'Isere is the most popular ski resort of all. The combination of great skiing (it is linked to neighbouring Tignes to form the Espace Killy ski area of 300km of pistes and 94 lifts) and a visitor-friendly resort centre make Val d'Isere the destination of choice for many returning, long-time skiers. The downside? With popularity come price increases, and you should expect to pay handsomely for your stay here. Find out more about Val d'Isere Ski Resort, France.

La Rosiére

La Rosiére sits on the other side of the Isére Valley and is a small, friendly, family-orientated resort. It is connected with La Thuile in Italy forming the Espace San Bernardo on each side of the Little St Bernard pass. It's proximity to Mont Blanc means that snow conditions are usually very good. The Espace St Bernardo has around 160 kms of pistes with more being developed over the next couple of years. There are pistes to suit all abilities as well as extensive off piste skiing opportunities. Find out more about La Rosiére.

Alpe d'Huez

With an impressive vertical drop of 2,200 metres, Alpe d'Huez offers an enormous skiable range for visitors of all abilities. Perhaps its biggest selling point is its suitability for beginners, intermediates and advanced skiers alike. This is not the prettiest ski resorts and those who visit for the architecture may go home disappointed, but the fantastic pistes for all abilities, large ski area, dependable snow coverage, and easy accessibility make Alpe d'Huez a very respectable choice for all group types. Find out more about Alpe d'Huez.

North America

Okay, this probably merits more than the couple of paragraphs we can dedicate to the subject right here, but this page wouldn't be complete if we didn't at least mention our friends across the pond.

What are the biggest differences between Europeean and North American skiing? Well, according to Charles Leocha of USA Today, "The mountains in Europe are simply bigger - grand, jagged, rugged, inspiring and soaring. In the United States, [...] slopes seem to trace their way down what appear to be oversized hills." Scale and vertical drop tend to be much bigger in Europe.

In defence of American skiing, we should observe a couple of areas where they certainly do have the edge. First, queuing for lifts: they have a much better system, making more efficient use of each chair or gondola, and your skis will scarcely be stepped on. Second, the attitude to the skiing: in America and Canada, skiers are there to ski - end of subject. Coffee, lunch, wine and apres ski all come second to the higher priority of racking up maximum time on the slopes.

Need to Widen the Search?

If you're looking for something very specific, or if you're looking for a late deal on a peak week such as February half term, some of the larger chalet companies and chalet advertising sites can be a good place to start the search.

Some of these larger sites offer a service where you can explain your requirements and then have the chalet companies come to you, instead of you searching for something which might be hard to find.
